Aim of the study. To determine the characteristics of cellular immunity in HIV-positive injecting drug users (HIV-positive IDU). Methods. We examined a cohort of 37\u202fHIV-positive IDU\u00a0\u2014 19 (51.4%) men and 18 (48.6%) women. The comparison group consisted of 49\u202fHIV-negative injecting drug users (HIV-negative IDU), of which 23 (46.9%) were men and 26 (53.1%) women. The control group was represented by 19\u202fhealthy persons without markers of parenteral viral hepatitis and HIV infection\u00a0\u2014 6 (31.6%) men and 13 (68.4%) women, aged between 23\u202fto 41\u202fyears (median\u00a0\u2014 24.0\u202fyears, the lower quartile (Q25)\u00a0\u2014 23,0\u202fyears, the upper quartile (Q75)\u00a0\u2014 34,0\u202fyears. The route of infection was specified basing on epidemiological anamnesis of HIV-positive IDU. To determine the clinical stage of HIV infection the WHO classification (2006) was used. Results. The study found that the changes in the peripheral blood cells of HIV-positive IDU are characterized by significant impairments in cellular immunity, in particular\u00a0\u2014 the decline of T-helper cells (CD4+-cells), natural killer cells and T-natural killer cells (CD3\u2013CD16+56+- and CD3+CD16+56+-cells), B\u00a0lymphocytes (CD19+-cells) and regulatory cells CD425+ in combination with increased number of T-killers (CD8+-cells), and activated T-lymphocytes (CD3+HLA-DR+-cells). Conclusions. The correlation between cellular immunity abnormalities and drug consumption (duration of drug use and the patient\u2019s age) indicates the presence of additional, significant immunosuppressive effect of drugs on the immune reactivity state of HIV-positive IDU.
